Jack hugged his teddy bear tightly, while mum packed his slippers and pajamas into a bag.
“Why can’t I come with you?” he ask.
“Dad and I have to go away for one night,” said mum. “You are going to stay with Grand and Grandfather. They can’t wait to see you.”
“But I will be scared without you and Dad, “Whispered Jack.
“Don’t worry,” said Mum. “You will have such a good time, you won’t want to come home!”
Later that day, when Gran and Grandfather opened their front door, Holly, their little dog, peeped through Grand’s legs and wagged her tail with excitement. But soon, it was time for Jack to say goodbye to his mum and dad. Jack felt really sad. He didn’t want them to leave. He hugged his mum tightly. I will miss you, “he said.
Mum gave Jack a big hug, “We will back tomorrow morning, I promise,” she smiled, then, she and Dad got into the car.
As they drove away, jack waved until he couldn’t see the car anymore. His eyes filled with tears. “Come on, Jack,” said Gran, giving him a big cuddle. “We are going to have such a good time. Guess where Grandfather’s taking us this afternoon?” Grandfather gave him a tissue.
“Um… I don’t know,” He sniffed. Just then, Holly came bounding over. ”Hello, Holly, “said Jack, looking more cheerful. He rubbed her big, floppy ears. Jack loved Holly and, just for tonight, he could pretend she was his dog.
“Grandfather” ask jack, “where are we going this afternoon?”
“It’s a surprise,” said Grandfather. ”But we will need the car. Why don’t we give it a good clean?” so, Grandfather gave jack a big, yellow sponge and a bucket of soapy water. Soon, bubbles filled the air. They even went on holly’s nose!
Just then, Gran called to Jack from the kitchen. “I am going to make a lovely picnic to take with us,” said Grand. “Would you like to help me, Jack?”
Jack nodded. At home, he liked to help his mum, too. “Grandfather likes sausage rolls and I like cheese and tomato sandwiches,” said Gran. “What your favorite food?”
“Chocolate spread sandwiches!” said jack, licking his lips. ”can we take something for holly, to?”
“Of course,” said grand, smiling. “She can have one of her favorite crunchy biscuits.”
When the car was clean and the picnic was ready, Jack and Grandfather carefully packed everything for their trip into the boot. Then, Gran strapped jack into his car seat, Holly jumped into the back of the car and they all set off. “Here we are,” said Grandfather, “The park.”
“Great!” said jack. He couldn’t wait to get out and explore. They soon fund the perfect place for their picnic. Jack hungrily ate his chocolate sandwiches.
Afterwards, Grandfather took jack and holly for a walk in the woods, while Grand had a little nap. On the way, jack saw playground. “Can we go there, Grandfather?” he asked.
“of course, we can, “ said Grandfather. First, Grandfather pushed Jack on the swings and then watched him zoom down the slide.

“Weeee..!” cried jack, “This is great fun!” soon, he was laughing and playing with all the other children, while Grandfather watched, just like Jack’s mum and dad would do.
When it was time to go home, Grand packed up the picnic things and Grandfather put them back in the car. Jack was very tired and soon fell asleep. What a fun day they’d had.
That evening, Grand make jack a special dinner – sausages and mash, followed by apple pie and ice cream.
Afterwards, they watched jack’s favorite television program, until it was time for bed. As jack settled himself in bed, with his teddy bear beside him, Grandfather asked him what story he would like.
“Mum usually reads me this one,” said jack, picking up a book and handing it to Grandfather.
“Once upon a time…“began Grandfather. Jack knew the story off by heart. It was nice to hear it again, and soon he was drifting off to sleep. It was just like being at home.
When jack woke up, he couldn’t understand why his room felt so strange. Then, he remembered. He was staying with Grand and Grandfather!
“Breakfast time, Jack,” said grand, as she came in to help him dress. “Did you sleep well?” “Yes, thank you, Gran, “he said.
For breakfast, gran cooked jack a boiled egg, with toasted bread soldiers, milk and fresh orange juice. Delicious!
Jack helped Gran to clear away the breakfast things and do the washing up. Then he helped gran to pack his bag, ready for when mum and dad came to collect him.
Holly and Jack had great fun chasing each other round the garden. Then he saw his mum and dad arrive and ran to meet them. He gave them both a giant hug.
“Jack!” cried mum. “Have you had a really good time?”
“Yes, ”laughed jack. ”We went to the park and had a picnic and I played on a slide and had chocolate sandwiches and we took holly for a walk and Grandfather read me my favorite story. Please can I stay again ?”
Everyone laughed and holly barked. “Of course, you can!” said mam and dad.
